Allergy Prevention Tips for the Fall

Allergy Prevention Tips for the FallThe most effective way to beat allergy symptoms this fall is to prevent them. You may be especially susceptible to allergy symptoms such as frequent sneezing, itching and watery eyes inside your home. Long-term exposure to stale, humid air and various airborne allergens can trigger late onset allergy symptoms. Doctors are reporting more people being diagnosed with allergies later in life, as well as children and adolescents. Along with the increase in allergy sufferers, fortunately, scientists and HVAC contractors alike are getting better at recommending ways of allergy prevention inside the home:

  • Reduce indoor allergens. Indoor air pollutants can increase allergy symptoms, especially during very cold or hot weather when you’re more likely to spend more time indoors. Change filters on your HVAC system and get regular maintenance performed by a professional.
  • Stay away from irritants. Consult the Internet or local news to see what the pollen levels are in the Fresno area each day. Keep windows closed and stay inside if levels are unusually high. Take a shower when you get home to wash away pollution.
  • Improve indoor air quality in your home or office. Make sure the air in your home is free of indoor pollutants. Burn flame-free candles, use natural cleaning products if at all possible, smoke outdoors or not at all. Get a home energy audit to make sure your home is well-ventilated, as well as sealed from outside pollution.

Aren’t sure if you have allergy symptoms or a common cold? Colds are usually accompanied by aches and a slight fever. Colds will clear up in a couple of weeks, and allergy symptoms can last all season or sometimes even longer.
