Maintain Your Air Conditioner with These 3 Tips

Maintain Your Air Conditioner with These 3 TipsAs the warmer months approach in the San Joaquin Valley, it’s once again time to start thinking about your home’s air conditioner and its maintenance. It’s important to maintain your air conditioner, not just because of increased efficiency but to avoid problems that may arise from neglect. Below are three essential tips that will help you keep your A/C system running efficiently through the long Fresno area cooling months.

Clear Debris from Exterior Unit

Unfortunately, many homeowners end up neglecting their split-system A/C’s outside condensing/compressor unit during the winter. If you haven’t checked it in a while, you might be surprised to find debris such as leaves and tree branches that have blown on or even into the unit. This can reduce airflow into the condensing unit, and hamper heat exchange. Before you clear off the debris, especially any that has gotten inside the outside unit, turn off the electricity.

Replace Air Filters on a Regular Schedule

Your central A/C’s air filter is a wonderful thing. Unless it’s of low quality, the filter should capture a high number of allergens and other pollutants floating around in your home’s air, which improves air quality and health conditions in the home. If the filter becomes clogged, however, its effectiveness is greatly diminished. A dirty filter will force your A/C to work harder, which will cost you more and shorten the life of the equipment. Under normal conditions, you should inspect the air filter monthly and change it when it looks clogged or dirty.

Inspect Condensate Lines and Drain

Over time, sludge will accumulate within your A/C’s condensate lines and drain, which will decrease your air conditioner’s efficiency. Wash out these areas twice a year to keep them free and clear of dirt and mold. If you’re not confident in your ability to keep these components clean, call a professional HVAC technician who can do the job for you and guarantee proper service.
