Common Ductwork Obstructions That May Be Impeding Your Home’s Airflow

Common Ductwork Obstructions That May Be Impeding Your Home's AirflowDuctwork obstructions can be costly. When airflow is impeded, it requires extra work and energy by your heating and cooling equipment to meet your desired thermostat settings, which elevates your utility bills. It also causes more wear and tear on these systems, which increases your repair bills. Airflow obstructions have a negative impact on your whole-home comfort and indoor air quality. The sooner you have them addressed and repaired, the sooner these issues will be resolved.

The following are some of the most common ductwork obstructions that may be restricting airflow in your Fresno area home:

Dirty or clogged filters. This is the leading cause of HVAC equipment breakdowns. It’s a shame because filter changes are an easy, DIY maintenance task. When they become clogged or excessively dirty, it makes it difficult for your system to keep air moving efficiently. This also can contribute to accumulated dirt and debris in your ducts, which compromises indoor air quality. Change your filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions and don’t forget to schedule semi-annual maintenance appointments where the filters will be inspected and changed for you. This is also a good time to discuss with your technician what type of filter you should be using.

Leaky ducts. The joints between duct segments, and where they join other HVAC components, need to be sealed tightly to prevent air from leaking. Over time, duct tape and sealant, and even the duct equipment itself, can begin to corrode or dry out. Keeping your ducts sealed and insulated will keep your utility bills more consistent.

Disconnected or collapsed ducts. Sometimes duct sections come completely apart, or may be dented or collapsed over time. Collapsed ducts are more common with flex duct material. In addition to causing ductwork obstructions, you may notice airflow variations from room to room.

Built up debris. If you live in an older home, have your ducts inspected for the above airflow obstructions, as well as accumulated debris. Your ducts can have construction byproducts as well as years of accumulated dust, lint, pet dander and other particulate matter that settles over time. Cleaning your ducts will free them of obstructions and improve your indoor air quality.
