Furnace Performance — Three Noises That Require Professional Attention

Furnace Performance -- Three Noises That Require Professional AttentionMany homeowners aren’t familiar with the telltale signs that their furnace needs to be professionally maintained or repaired. Simply recognizing the indicators early can prevent many of these technical problems from getting worse, and ensure that you return to solid furnace performance as quickly as possible. With certain issues, these signs come in the form of specific sounds. If you notice any of the following three noises coming from your furnace or HVAC system, the time has come to contact a local HVAC professional:

  1. High-pitched squeal. Often, when a furnace is having trouble with its blower belt slipping, the appliance will start making a high-pitched, squealing noise. This is a serious problem that can become seriously detrimental to your home’s heat distribution. This sound can also mean that your furnace performance is being hampered by its shaft bearings lacking lubrication, in which case they’ll need to be oiled by a professional.
  2. Low rumbling – with burners off. If you hear a low-pitched rumble coming from your furnace while its burners are off, it’s a sign that your unit’s pilot light needs to be readjusted. Because the pilot light is such an integral part of furnace performance, this is generally a problem that needs to be taken care of as soon as possible by a local HVAC contractor. This isn’t a problem for owners of the many modern furnaces that don’t use pilot lights.
  3. Low rumbling – with burners on. If that same low rumbling noise is happening while the burners are running, on the other hand, it’s usually an indication that they are dirty and need to be cleaned out. Working with the gas burners can be quite dangerous for an amateur, meaning this cleaning process should only be handled by someone professionally trained.

So, keep an ear out for any of these noises, and don’t hesitate to call for professional help if one becomes apparent. For any of your local HVAC needs, contact us at Donald P. Dick Air Conditioning. We’ve been serving the greater Fresno area since 1970.
